About

Trombonist Peter Turner is known for his work in the traditional jazz scenes of Ottawa and Toronto. In Ottawa, he performs in the monthly Fever Pitch Hot Jazz series at Art House Cafe and at Westboro Legion jazz matinees with the Capital City Stompers. In recent years, he played regularly with Bob Misener’s Magnolia Rhythm Kings, as well as with Peter Liu and the Pollcats. Earlier in his career, Peter performed across Canada with the Derek Robertson Jazz Band and was a frequent sub with the Apex Jazz Band.

In Toronto, Peter plays regularly with Dinny and the All Stars, the Ragweed Jazz Band, and the Jazz Gangsters. He has worked with many other Toronto groups, including the New Orleans Connection All Stars, the Excelsior Dixieland Jazz Band, and the Climax Jazz Band. Since 2010, Peter has appeared more than 50 times at the Kitchener-Waterloo Dixieland Jazz Club.

Beyond traditional jazz, Peter has a vast repertoire of jazz standards. In duo and trio settings, other musicians have remarked on Peter’s ability to instantly recall hundreds of tunes on demand without sheet music – as well as the ease with which he can transpose into vocalists’ preferred keys. In big bands, Peter stands out as an improvising soloist.
